Micas Networks 800G Ethernet Switches — Technical Review

Category: Data Center Networking | High-Speed Ethernet Switching | AI/ML Infrastructure

Products reviewed: M2-W6940-64OC and M2-W6950-128OC

Manufacturer:  Micas Networks

Overview

Micas Networks offers high-density, open-networking Ethernet switches designed for hyperscale data centers, AI/ML clusters, and high-performance computing environments.

Its 800G portfolio combines Broadcom Tomahawk switching silicon with SONiC (Software for Open Networking in the Cloud), providing an alternative to proprietary switching platforms from Cisco, Juniper, and Arista.

The principal attraction is high port density, standards-based networking, and freedom to choose the network operating system. However, hardware performance alone does not establish operational maturity. NOS functionality, interoperability, troubleshooting capabilities, software support, and lifecycle management are equally important considerations.

Micas announced a significant customer win in April 2026 when Criteo selected its 800G switching infrastructure following a competitive RFP. This provides a useful commercial reference, although the announcement does not establish long-term production reliability.

Technical assessment: Both platforms offer competitive port density and switching capacity. The newer Tomahawk 6 platform doubles aggregate bandwidth without increasing 800G port density per rack unit.

However, advertised switching capacity is not a substitute for measured performance under realistic traffic conditions. Buyers should request independent results covering minimum-size packets, mixed packet sizes, congestion, and simultaneous line-rate operation across all ports.

2. Key Strengths

High-bandwidth Ethernet fabrics

The 64-port and 128-port configurations are well suited to high-radix leaf-spine architectures. Higher port counts can reduce the number of switching tiers required in large deployments, potentially lowering cabling complexity and inter-switch latency.

Open networking architecture

Support for ONIE and SONiC allows operators to separate hardware procurement from network operating system decisions. This is particularly attractive to organizations with existing SONiC expertise and automated infrastructure deployment processes.

AI and RDMA networking

Micas advertises RoCEv2 support and lossless Ethernet capabilities. The Tomahawk 6 platform additionally lists Priority Flow Control (PFC), Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN), Dynamic Load Balancing, Fast CNP, and congestion telemetry.

These capabilities are important for distributed AI training, where congestion and packet loss can substantially affect job completion times.

Hardware redundancy

Hot-swappable power supplies and fans improve serviceability. The newer 128-port platform offers 2+2 power-supply redundancy and 7+1 fan redundancy.

Potential cost advantages

The disaggregated hardware/software model may offer lower acquisition costs and greater procurement flexibility than traditional proprietary platforms. Actual savings depend on SONiC licensing, support agreements, optics, automation, and operational expertise.

3. Technical Limitations and Concerns

A. SONiC maturity and feature completeness

SONiC compatibility should not be interpreted as feature equivalence with Cisco NX-OS, Juniper Junos, or Arista EOS.

Important capabilities requiring validation include:

* BGP EVPN and VXLAN interoperability.

* BGP convergence and route-scale limits.

* ECMP scalability and resilient hashing.

* Graceful restart and control-plane recovery.

* Configuration rollback and software upgrade behavior.

* Network telemetry, logging, and troubleshooting tools.

Assessment: The hardware may be suitable for demanding production environments, but the exact SONiC distribution and release must be qualified against the intended architecture.

B. Congestion management and packet buffering

The 165.2 MB and 267 MB packet buffers should be evaluated relative to aggregate port bandwidth.

For example, 165.2 MB represents approximately 25.8 microseconds of traffic at 51.2 Tbps, assuming the entire buffer were available as a single shared pool.

This is only a theoretical illustration, not a measured congestion tolerance.

For AI workloads, buffer allocation, PFC behavior, ECN thresholds, head-of-line blocking, and congestion spreading are more meaningful than buffer capacity alone.

Assessment: Buyers should require RoCEv2 congestion tests using representative AI workloads before production adoption.

C. Operational visibility and troubleshooting

High-speed fabrics require more than conventional interface counters and SNMP polling.

Operators should establish whether the deployed SONiC version supports:

* Streaming telemetry through gNMI/gRPC.

* Queue-level congestion statistics.

* PFC pause and deadlock detection.

* ECN marking visibility.

* Packet-drop attribution.

* Buffer occupancy and microburst monitoring.

* Integration with existing DCIM and NMS platforms.

Assessment: The publicly available product specifications do not sufficiently establish end-to-end operational visibility. This is an important evaluation area, particularly for enterprises accustomed to mature vendor-specific management ecosystems.

D. Power consumption and thermal design

The M2-W6950-128OC lists approximately 4,375 W typical and 5,902 W maximum switch power consumption.

Although port density is impressive, operators must account for optics, cooling, and rack power distribution when comparing alternatives.

At 800G speeds, transceiver power and thermal behavior can materially affect total deployment cost.

Assessment: Evaluate watts per delivered 800G port, including optics, rather than comparing chassis power alone.

E. Support ecosystem and lifecycle management

The open networking model introduces additional operational responsibilities.

Customers should establish clear ownership of hardware faults, SONiC defects, ASIC-related issues, security updates, and interoperability problems.

A critical procurement question is whether Micas provides a single accountable support organization for the complete hardware and software solution.

Assessment: Support maturity, escalation procedures, replacement SLAs, and software maintenance commitments deserve the same scrutiny as switching performance.

4. Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages    Limitations / Risks

High-density 800G connectivity    Requires SONiC operational expertise

Broadcom Tomahawk 5/6 silicon    NOS features depend on distribution and release

Open networking and ONIE    Support accountability must be established

Designed for AI/ML and RoCEv2    Congestion behavior requires workload-specific validation

Redundant power and cooling    Significant power and optics requirements

Potentially attractive acquisition cost    Full lifecycle TCO is not publicly established

Growing commercial adoption    Limited publicly available independent benchmarking

5. ShriSR Assessment

Best suited for: Hyperscale operators, AI infrastructure providers, cloud service providers, and technically mature enterprises seeking high-bandwidth Ethernet fabrics with SONiC-based networking.

Less suitable for: Organizations requiring turnkey deployment, extensive vendor-managed operations, or a mature, integrated troubleshooting and management ecosystem without investing in SONiC expertise.

Recommendation: Shortlist Micas for high-density 800G leaf-spine and AI fabric deployments, but require a production-representative proof of concept covering routing convergence, RoCEv2 congestion management, telemetry, interoperability, software upgrades, and fault recovery.

The M2-W6940-64OC offers a commercially established 51.2 Tbps platform, while the newer M2-W6950-128OC provides a path to 102.4 Tbps switching capacity.

Overall verdict: Micas presents a technically credible alternative to established data center switch vendors, particularly where open networking and bandwidth density are priorities. Its strongest differentiator is the combination of Broadcom silicon, SONiC compatibility, and high-density hardware. The principal consideration is whether the complete solution—including software, support, automation, and operational visibility—meets enterprise production requirements.
